On September 11, 2019, Halton Regional Council unanimously approved a motion to join municipalities across Canada in declaring a climate emergency. This action underscored Halton’s commitment to building a resilient economy, protecting the environment, and supporting community well‑being, while formally recognizing the impacts climate change.
The Corporate Climate Action Plan, accompanying Report No. CA‑16‑23, has been developed to guide Halton Region’s response to climate change following Council’s unanimous declaration of a climate emergency. The Region recognizes its responsibility to reduce corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, strengthen the resilience of infrastructure and services.
Halton is already experiencing the impacts of climate change through more frequent and severe weather events, including flooding, high winds, tornadoes, ice storms, and extreme temperatures. These impacts pose growing risks to regional infrastructure, resources, and the health, safety, and prosperity of Halton’s communities. Addressing these risks and limiting the most severe consequences of climate change will require urgent and coordinated action to accelerate the Region’s climate transition.
Climate change and environmental stewardship are identified as strategic priorities in Halton’s 2023–2026 Strategic Business Plan. The Corporate Climate Action Plan builds on these priorities through four themes and associated actions that focus regional efforts and advance progress toward a resilient, low‑carbon future.
